Keeping the Word: Reflections on
Sacred and Secular Aspects of Librarianship
Eleanor Jo
(Joey) Rodger, M.S.
Thursday, June 14
This presentation will explore the invitations and conflicts
embedded in one person's sacred call to an assertively secular profession.
Participants will be invited to consider harmonies and tensions in their
own paths and practices of librarianship
Joey Rodger is
the "sort of retired" Executive Director of the
Pendle Hill Peace
Center
in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. For twelve
years she was the Executive Director of the Urban Libraries
Council (ULC) in Evanston, Illinois, which established a Leadership Grant in her honor in 2004. The grant
provides financial assistance to a library leader for participation in a
leadership development opportunity.
Prior
to joining ULC, Ms. Rodger was Executive Director of the Public Library
Association and did research on issues of equity in
the distribution of publicly funded services, particularly public library
services, and was a practicing public librarian. She was the author of a regular column in the ULC
Exchange as well as numerous research reports, articles, and various strategic plans written
as a consultant for public library clients such as the Free Library of
Philadelphia, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, and the Baltimore County
Public Library.
